Louvre Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, UAE
Designed by Jean Nouvel
Sitting out on Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is open, bright, and quietly monumental. The 180-meter-wide dome stretched over the museum is a lacework of steel that filters the sunlight reaching into the courtyard below.
The mastermind behind the museum is French architect Jean Nouvel. The entire campus feels like an urban village, but instead of houses it consists of galleries and courtyards divided by water channels. It is clearly contemporary but effortlessly timeless in it’s design.
I had a few short hours during a layover to visit the museum, and photographed it as a personal project with only my travel camera. In that short space of time it became one of my favorite buildings in the world. I’d plan to return one day and spend the time this incredible structure deserves.
