Best Architecture YouTube Channels for Everyone

After the success of my previous post chronicling different YouTube channels for architects and students of architecture, I thought it was time for a follow up.

Learning from others is important and has been the foundation of my success as an architectural photographer. Time is a finite resource, so I don’t spend as much time watching videos on architecture as I used to, but I still enjoy learning about the design behind buildings.

This list is not exclusively targeted at architects but rather are a fun and fascinating dive into the built environment for everyone. That said, students of architecture are bound to find some incredible inspiration for both residential and commercial architecture.

Architectural Digest

Architectural Digest is a heavy hitter in the world of residential architecture, with countless video tours of homes, as well as occasional videos focused on commercial spaces. They are helpfully divided up into miniseries like “space savers” and “walking tours” such as a critique of Central Park. As budding filmmaker myself, I actually prefer The Local Project’s videos, as featured in my previous blogpost, but I still enjoy watching those produced by Architectural Digest.

NEVER TOO SMALL

NEVER TOO SMALL is a channel focused on micro homes! I got to briefly experience micro living at Zoku Copenhagen in Denmark, and fell in love with spaces that punch well above their square footage. This channel’s most popular content are home tours, but it also features docuseries on design concepts, dealing with construction waste, and other thoughtfully researched topics. It is definitely a good place to go for inspiration.

Architecture is a Good Idea

Architecture is a Good Idea is a small but fascinating channel created by Polish Architect Radka Gajdy. His video blogs are usually tours of various European architectural wonders, created during his travels across the continent. Oftentimes he is showing how modern architecture pays homage to the history and architecture of the past. Radka hasn’t posted any new content for several years, but his current videos are worth checking out.

The B1M

Chances are you have seen videos from the B1M, a very popular channel with well-produced videos on giant engineering projects and famous (or infamous) buildings. If you want to learn about Norway’s coastal highway, why Europe has very few skyscrapers, or the Dubai Creek Tower, this is the channel for you.

This particular video is about the roundabout-containing tunnels linking the Faroe Islands, one of my favorite places in the world.

Grand Designs

Grand Designs is the official channel of the BBC TV show by the same name, dedicated to modern architecture and design in Britain. If you want to sit back and relax while learning some random tidbits about new materials, and unusual residential building techniques, this is a great channel to follow.

Kings and Things

As the name suggests, Kings and Things is a channel about ancient times, including architecture from around the world. Although not solely dedicated to architecture, this channel covers some fascinating topics, such as monuments that were planned but never built in Washington DC, or Chinese-inspired architecture in Europe. It is a delightful channel for anyone!

Stewart Hicks

Last but not least is Stewart Hicks, who some call the VSauce of Architecture. He tackles all sorts of niche design questions that everyone will find interesting, and explains them really well. Probably my favorite recent video is this one about the difficulties of 3D printing buildings out of concrete, and why although useful, it is not the magic solution that it is purported to be by the media.
